Shoulder replacement surgery, also known as shoulder arthroplasty, is a medical procedure designed to alleviate pain and restore function in the shoulder joint, typically for individuals suffering from severe arthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy, or significant trauma. The procedure involves replacing the damaged parts of the shoulder with artificial components: the humeral head (ball) is replaced with a metal ball, and the glenoid cavity (socket) is fitted with a plastic or metal component. This surgery aims to reduce pain, improve mobility, and enhance the overall quality of life for patients who have not found relief through conservative treatments such as medications, physical therapy, or corticosteroid injections. Advances in surgical techniques and prosthetic designs have significantly improved outcomes, offering greater stability and a more natural range of motion post-surgery.
